It’s probably no question that earthquakes have been on everyone’s mind especially if you’re like me and living in California. According to California Earthquake Authority, only 12 percent of Californians have earthquake insurance. This means about 9 out of 10 homeowners and renters are left unprotected to the disaster. U.S. Senators Dianne Feinstein and Barbara Boxer are trying to change that.
Earthquake Insurance Affordability Act
Under this proposed act, it aims to lower costs of earthquake insurance from non-profit, state-run programs. The hope is to encourage more people to buy earthquake insurance without costing federal taxpayers. In an Insurance Journal article, the two senators state, “Following major disasters, the federal government spends billions of dollars in response efforts. By enacting the Earthquake Insurance Affordability Act and increasing the number of individuals with insurance, the cost of disaster recovery to the federal government could be substantially lower.”
Earthquake Insurance Notes
Earthquake policies are separate from your homeowners insurance or property insurance. There are different kinds of deductibles depending on your location and needs. You can also have a policy put together to cover other structures and living expenses additional to your home.
